Head of the Spokane Results

Today, the Cougs raced at the Head of the Spokane Regatta on the Spokane River, facing off against Gonzaga University. WSU entered in total eleven lineups, racing a combination of coxed eights and coxed fours in both men and women’s events. Many athletes raced in multiple events, competing in an exhausting battle of endurance and fitness.

First up, starting off in the chilly hours of the morning was the Men’s Varsity Eight, the Men’s Second Varsity Eight, and the Novice ‘A’ and ‘B’ eights. The 1V8+ finished in third place with respect to time, behind Gonzaga’s first and second varsity boats. Shortly behind was the 2V8+, taking fourth overall fastest time. The Novice boats finished seventh and eighth in the category, falling just short of their Gonzaga counterparts.

Next to race were the women’s 8+ events. The 1V8+ took sixth in the category, defeating both the Gonzaga novice 1V8+ and 2V8+ and crossing the line in under twenty minutes, while the 1N8+ women fell just short of the Gonzaga 2nd Novice.

“This was the first race at Spokane for many of the girls in my boat and for others the first race as a varsity rower,” 1V8+ bow seat Harlow Bronstein said. “I was surprised and actually really proud by how well we rowed, especially because we managed to stay set up pretty well.”

Following this heat, the women raced again, launching the Varsity 4+, and the Second Novice 8+. Unfortunately, the 1V4+ failed to start, but the 2N8+ raced hard and crossed the line in 9th place in their heat.

Lastly, the final heat, consisting of the Men’s 4+ events and the Third Novice 8+, launched at 10:30. The 1V4+ battled hard against Gonzaga’s top 4+, racing head to head until the very end, but coming up just three seconds behind the GU boat, taking a respectable 2nd Place in the heat. The 2V4+, racing with fire in their eyes and determination to prove themselves, took fifth place in the heat.

“Everything came together,” bow seat Alexander Ashton said. “We had a race plan, and we executed.”

Last but not least, the Men’s 3N8+ raced later in the same heat as the fours, crossing the line in eighth place in the flight.

The Cougs came away from racing today with lessons learned and renewed drive and focus. With the first fall regatta behind us, the team will continue to train and prepare for the upcoming Head of the Snake at our home race course, where we will once again face Gonzaga University.

Once again, special thanks to the parents and boosters who provided our athletes with outstanding support!
